Princess Lamballe was one of Marie Antoinette's closest friends. But that is not why she became so famous. Her name went down in history as the most prominent victim of the September Massacres. She was brutally murdered. A sham court led by Hébert found her guilty and handed her over to the mob, which mercilessly slaughtered her. Amid the hellish laughter of the crowd, she endured a horrific martyrdom. It is unknown which of the hundreds of dehumanized citizens ultimately dealt the fatal blow. Yet death was not enough for the unleashed cannibals. They desecrated the princess's body, tore it apart, and carried the severed head, impaled on a pike, past the window of the imprisoned queen. JK
